Obama: We Need More Scientists and Engineers

Other Articles, Political, Technical No Comments »

I was browsing around the web and ran into this article on Obama revitalizing the US. in it he says

"Obama said a change he looks forward to "is once again seeing our best and our brightest commit themselves to making things – engineers, scientists, innovators" and not simply go to Wall Street, lured by huge salaries."

If you’re going to make Wall Street look like the bad guy, don’t forget the medical industry either.

Even a nurse makes as much as I do. A nurse with a masters degree (i.e. CRNA), almost twice the salary! Why would I make things, when as doctor/nurse I can just take my pay check and buy it from India?

Damn hackers!

Technical, Uncategorized No Comments »

I was alerted by a buddy of mine, Arif, that Google has dubbed my site malicious. There was some malicious code in one of my posts and it was embedding an iframe to go retrieve a trojan.

I suspect that it occurred when I was trying out some photo galleries on Wordpress. Specifically, I read it was from Coppermine Photo Gallery which was installed only temporarily. Damn, those hackers work fast!

I suggest to those who have visited this blog in September to scan your computer. If you need a virus scanner, I’ll be more than happy to provide a version of McAfee.

Anyone who has a version of McAfee running would have been alerted to the Trojan. Those without a virus scanner, and was running Firefox, may have received a warning from Google that the site is malicious.

My First TV Repair

Technical, Uncategorized No Comments »

This past weekend, I successfully repaired my first TV. It was no easy task. It took me a total of about 15 hours (not including time researching and previous attempts).

First, I would like to thank the company at http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/, and their employee, Sonny Berry, for providing superb customer service, technical knowledge, and patience. All e-mails I sent to them were usually responded within 2 minutes. NO JOKE!

I highly recommend that company if you are in need of some parts.

Secondly, I’d like to thank the people at TechLore, especially user zapdbf for providing their technical knowledge to previous users that had the same issues as I did.

Han’s parents have a Sony Rear Projection TV. There is an issue where the three colors of the tv will unconverge, like shown below.

Basically, I had to dismantle the TV and replace the two convergence chips. Additionally I had to go through the board and check and possibly replace the fuses and resistors that deal with the convergence. Since it took me 15 hours, either I suck at electronics, or it was easier said than done. I hope you think it’s the second one.

But anyways, I’m happy I was able to fix it because the $80 parts saved Han’s parents $1500. Getting boyfriend points was icing on the cake.

Symfony 1.1 + Xampp

Technical No Comments »

Well, I encountered more problems with Symfony. I receive this error when I try to build the database

“Cannot make static method Phing::printVersion()”

Searching the web there are 3 solutions.

1, uninstall Phing using Pear because it installs a bad version or something (too bad for me my Pear doesn’t work…)

2 Modify Phing’s code to make the method static, but, I’m not 100% sure how to compile the files

3) Use Symfony 1.0

I chose #3 :) . The tutorial I’m reading on is for 1.0 anyways, might as well take the easiest path.

Xampp + Symfony + Vista = Headache

Technical No Comments »

I’ve trying to setup Xampp and Symfony on Vista (probably a bad idea in the first place!) and rain into a lot of trouble. Don’t know why…(well, I probably know why). What I did in XP in < 1 hour took me half a day. I’m not surprised, but it sucks, because today, was a day all for me!

Anyways, what was happening was that Xampp would start and I can run MySQL, but Apache would not start even though it stays it is starting, or it would not do anything when I click start.

I believe the VirtualHost settings are incorrect and should be appended with something more like this, as shown on the askeet tutorial.

  ServerName askeet
DocumentRoot "C:/sfprojects/askeet/web"
DirectoryIndex index.php
Alias /sf "C:/wamp/php/PEAR/data/symfony/web/sf"
<Directory "C:/sfprojects/askeet/web">
AllowOverride All
Allow from All
</Directory>
<Directory "C:/wamp/php/PEAR/data/symfony/web/sf">
AllowOverride All
Allow from All
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Also, the file to edit should be C:\Program Files\xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd

At least, this is what worked for me.

Moved Servers

Technical No Comments »

For anyone who actually noticed, the site was down for a little bit. I’ve moved off a server I used strictly for personal, and put my personal files on the same server as SwampBoard. Save me a little bit of money, especially since my trial period for the personal hosting is over and they want to charge me $120 upfront for 1 year :)

Vixy: Flash Video Converter

Startup Related, Technical 3 Comments »

In recent years, streaming video has become ubiquitous. Most of the streaming video is delivered through a flash player, the best example being the one implemented by YouTube. However, Flash Video is not a very popular format on the desktop. It’s a shame that Windows Media Player does not play it.

You can download flash video players so you can save the flash video file and watch it offline, however if you would like a consistent media player rather than one for every file (I’m looking at you, Real Player and Quicktime) you may want to convert the .flv (flash video file) into something that is more suitable for desktop playing.

I’ve tried several web based converters, they all suck. For some of them, you need to first download the .flv (which you may need a *seperate* website to get!) and then upload it. I’ve tried some where the retrieval is automatic and just requires a link to the page where the video is hosted, but somewhere in between it hangs, or even touts that YouTube is down!

Meet the vixy.net desktop converter – the best thing for Flash Video since, Flash. Ironically, I had trouble using the web based vixy converter, which is what the desktop one is based on. The vixy desktop converter will automatically download the .flv file, and convert it for you. You can even select the standard to convert to. Support conversion formats include .avi, .mov, .mp4, .3gp, and strictly just .mp3. All you need to do is copy in the URL, and hit start. That’s it! No going to multiple sites, finding the damn flv file…and best of all, it actually works!

And yes….there are ads. I don’t mind. Hopefully the developers behind vixy get money for impressions – I’m not going to click on those ads.
