Finished Anatomy and Physiology

Medical Career, Rants No Comments »

I’ve finally completed the summer class at Macon State College. I will have to say I am slightly disappointed I did not get an A, and that I put too much effort to just get a B. I got a 88.6, and there are no B+ at MSC.

I am also disheartened that a fellow student, who I feel does not know how to reason correctly was able to memorize her way through the class and got an A. One who thought osteoporosis was gaining too much bone density, even though she knew it is due to an increase of osteoclasts , which destroy bone. The same student, who did not know why a pH of 0 is most acidic, and memorized it as such…

I am also disheartened that another fellow student I sat next to got a similar score as me, but only studied the day off and day before the exam. I will have to give her credit though, that she is probably more intelligent than she thinks she is, as she is going to graduate from UGA in 3 years.

Slightly irritated that on the first lab exam I got 5 wrong in a row because I bubbled in the wrong spot…if I had gotten those right I would have a 89.

I guess what I’m most discontented about is the school system does not permit transcripts to show your percentage grade, but just a letter grade. Thus my efforts of obtaining a 88.6 is rewarded the same as one who would earn a 80. I’m personally a proponent of displaying the percentage on the transcript, or at least a B+ and B- system (I do not believe in A-. If you get a 90, that is an A, not a A-!!). With all our grades being automated, it should be easily to transition in this, not a silly archaic A,B,C,D, F system.

I will admit, that I found the class interesting and I am glad I have the knowledge I know now. I was more interested in the physiology aspect. Memorizing body parts does not turn me on.

With my work schedule, plus driving (45 minutes each way), 4.5 hours of class per day, twice a week, plus studying, and other things…crammed into a 9 week period, took a toll on me. I’ve decided to take the Fall semester off from school and pursue other things.

I may continue taking A&P2 in the spring. I plan on continuing to volunteer at the hospital. I am slightly bored at the tasks assigned, but I am hoping I can get my way into more exciting duties.

Quality Health Care vs Cost

Medical Career, Political, Rants No Comments »

From the books and articles I’ve read I’m very convinced that more money does not equal higher quality. Here is an article in the New York Times with some good pointers that look at both sides of the arguments as well as provides the papers that back up the commentary.

"In sum, the evidence for regional variations in the United States and in other countries is strong, and every study indicates huge levels of inefficiency in health-care spending."

optical amplifier

http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/13/is-more-care-better-care/?hp

…"Medicare beneficiaries in higher spending regions are hospitalized more frequently, are referred to specialists more often and have a much smaller proportion of their visits to primary care physicians.”"

Which is why every doctor wants to be a specialist….charge more $, cost the health care industry more $…screw over family doctor, who should be the first line of defense in health care! Something along those lines…

Can’t trust anyone these days

I’ve started a vegetable garden in pots at my apartment. I had two tomato plants, in 5 gallon containers behind my patio. I came out today to do some work on them, and they were gone. I walked around to see maybe the apartment moved them because they were doing maintenance, but they were on where to be seen.

I can only conclude that someone stole my precious plants. I grew them from seeds and they were getting big (almost 3 feet tall). I was hesitant to place them outside, because there are lots of kids around here that run around. I thought maybe they would mess with or knock them over by accident. Never would I think that someone would outright steal them.

I have 4 green pepper plants and 1 tomato plant I had kept inside. I think I need 2 tomato plants so they can pollinate…so I may just go out and buy another.

There are plenty of grills around here that people place outside. I don’t believe people steal those. So, why would someone steal my plants? Because they are inexpensive? They are the fruits of my labor. I hope they go to hell, bastards.

I’m boycotting CNN.com over the word pix

Personal, Political, Rants No Comments »

I was at work today, browsing the web (what else) and I went to CNN.com. On the front page were two headlines. One was describing the the photo shoot of Air Force One over New York City. The other, of the semi-nude pictures of Miss California. Each time they used the word pictures, they substituted with pix.

I don’t have the exact wording, since it’s not on CNN.com anymore, but it was something like "$328,835 pix…." or "Miss California pix….".

Who’s the editor? Some pimple faced 14 year old? Or are you trying to insult your audience? Or maybe their target audience is between the age of 13 – 18. I can not respect a major news organization that will use the word pix.

I have plenty of other news sources to go to, where I don’t feel dumber when I leave the site.

I’ve bitched about their online articles in the past, and I’m finally so fed up I’m going to stop going there.

ING ShareBuilder

I’d hate to interrupt my series of posting about CASA but if you’ve read my other postings you know I get irritated when I see errors created by large companies.

Taxes are due soon so I’m looking at opening up a Roth IRA account. I have an account with ING Direct, and so far I’ve had no complaints. So naturally, I am looking towards their investment branch, ShareBuilder, to open up my Roth IRA.

If you look at the screen shot below, the “Basic” account does not include Gain & Loss Tracking. I thought it was a bit silly to now know how much money you’ve made or lost in an investment account, so I poked around some more.

image

On their “Pricing and Rates” page, look! Basic includes Gain & Loss Tracking.

image

Well I’ll be damned. A financial institution having conflicting information on their web site, just a few clicks apart. Now, should I open up a Basic account and hope it includes Gain & Loss Tracking? It would be nice to know how much money I have/don’t have when I retire. Or should I open up one with ScottTrade, which, I know includes it?

I am going to e-mail their customer service and see what they have to say.

Racism in the US

Political, Rants No Comments »

I don’t usually talk about touchy subject, but I will go out on a whim. I was listening to NPR, and they interviewed a 76 year old black  female. She told the interviewer she voted for Obama because he’s black, and went on to say that black people do not have opportunities in life to become successful.   She later on was asked if she thinks racism will ever end in the US, and she replied no, people will always hate and discriminate. It’s easy to put blame in others and not see the faults in ourselves. But lady, when you vote for Barack Obama because he’s black, that is racism. And because of people like you, yes, racism will never die.

In my years through college, I have witness many opportunities given solely to black people, and minorities in the form of scholarships strictly for minorities (some even excluded Asians, because in engineering, Asians are not minority), or educational programs strictly for minorities. Government, educational institutions and corporates reach out to under served minorities.

Even without such programs, I am a firm believe that in the United States, everyone has the opportunity to become successful one way or another. You may not be sitting on the executive board of a Fortune 500 company, but you for damn sure make enough money to raise a family and live very comfortably. You can do this without breaking laws, backstabbing people, or any other unethical or immoral actions.

The first generation in my family proved you do not need a formal education to succeed. Only 3 of the 14 of my aunts and uncles that came move to the US from China received a college degree. I would say, none spoke English either. Specifically neither of my parents graduated high school. Yet we are all doing well.

The second generation in my family proved that you do not need to come from a wealthy or educated family to attend college. Of the 8 children who are > 18 years old and raised in the US, 8 have a college education. 4 have a masters degree. We are all doing well.

Before you look at others for a reason why you are not doing well, maybe you should look at yourself first.

I do believe Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have broken a lot of barriers that are not there for white males in the political world. I do believe that once you reach a certain level, particularly in upper management of companies, the “Good Ol Boys” have a large say on who gets on board. However, to say that opportunities do not exist, is complete BS.

Article titled Jolie leaves hospital with newborn twins has the following paragraph…

“Jolie checked into the hospital on July 2 and delivered the babies by Cesarian section 10 days later. Knox Leon weighed 5.03 pounds and the Vivienne Marcheline 5 pounds.”

I like how the journalist gave Vivienne an article before her name…as if she were an inanimate object.

Update to Previous Article

Rants No Comments »

Well, Grant commented on a previous article that I probably misread a CNN article I was ranting about. The article states that the US has 4 billionaires in the top 20, whilst India has 4 in the top 10. Without actually looking at the list, I don’t think any more conclusion can be derived. i.e. how many total billionaires in the US vs India, difference in wealth between the American and Indian billionaires…

Oh well. I don’t think you’re suppose to dwell too deeply on the CNN articles.

I’m reading an article about the Tesla Roadster’s debutкомпютри втора употреба. For those who don’t know, the Roadster is a 100% electric sports car, baseline is $109,000. In talking about the need to recharge the battery, the author of the report writes

“Driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco, however, would require stopping in, say, Fresno and plugging its adapter cord into a motel room wall socket.”

Plug into a motel room wall socket…? a motel room? Were you referring to the motel because that’s where the car’s chauffeur will be staying at? Or do a journalist actually thinks that someone who drops $109k for a car isUna vez que el jugador de video casino haya elegido el valor de la moneda con la que apostara, necesita seleccionar cuantas monedas va a apostar. going to be at a freaken damn motel?!?

Later on, the journalist writes

“Tesla officials say Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, actors George Clooney and Kelsey Grammer and musicians Will.i.am and Flea have ordered Roadsters.”

I guess we’ll see them at Super 8…
